GST inclusive calculator: an Australian price after a discount
If a wholly taxable AUD 220 inclusive price is validly reduced by 10%, the reduction is AUD 22 and the final price is AUD 198. At the assumed 10% GST treatment, the final price contains AUD 18 GST.

- Before GST

- Including GST
- AUD 198.00
AUD 180.00 + AUD 18.00 = AUD 198.00
GST is rounded first to cents, exact half-cents up. The chart shows shares of the total, not the percentage applied to the before-tax amount.
Keep the discount percentage separate from the GST rate
A GST inclusive calculator can help check a reduced price, but “10% off” and “10% GST” do not describe the same operation. A discount refers to a stated starting price. GST refers to the taxable base under the established treatment.
The ATO’s calculating GST on purchases material explains extracting GST from a wholly taxable inclusive amount. Its adjustment-note ruling, GSTR 2013/2 treats documentary adjustments as a separate subject. These references were consulted on 19 October 2026; the linked ruling is its specified point-in-time version.
Our example assumes an ordinary wholly taxable supply at 10% and a validly established 10% reduction of its inclusive price. It does not determine how vouchers, rebates, reimbursements, mixed supplies or settlement conditions should be treated.
Calculate the agreed inclusive reduction first
Begin with an AUD 220 GST-inclusive price. A 10% reduction of that amount is AUD 22, leaving AUD 198:
Inclusive reduction = 220 x 0.10 = AUD 22.00
Final inclusive price = 220 - 22 = AUD 198.00
This calculation establishes the mathematical price change under the stated assumptions. It is not an instruction to deduct every discount from every legal GST base.
Enter 198 and Extract GST in the adjustable example to inspect the final amount. It uses the same country engine as the Australian GST calculator, not an unrelated percentage embedded in the page.
Extract GST from the final inclusive price
For the assumed 10% treatment, the exact unrounded included-GST fraction is 10/110, equivalent to 1/11. AUD 198 divided by 11 gives AUD 18 GST, leaving AUD 180 before GST.
Multiplying AUD 198 directly by 10% gives AUD 19.80. That uses the wrong base for included GST. The statutory percentage and the discount percentage happen to have the same number in this example, but they still operate on different quantities.
| Scenario | Input | Rate | Before tax | Tax | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original GST-inclusive price | AUD 220.00 | 10% | AUD 200.00 | AUD 20.00 | AUD 220.00 |
| Agreed inclusive reduction, not the final price | AUD 22.00 | 10% | AUD 20.00 | AUD 2.00 | AUD 22.00 |
| Final inclusive price after the reduction | AUD 198.00 | 10% | AUD 180.00 | AUD 18.00 | AUD 198.00 |
The original AUD 220 contains AUD 200 before GST and AUD 20 GST. Under the same assumptions, the AUD 22 reduction contains AUD 20 net and AUD 2 GST. Subtracting those components gives AUD 180 net and AUD 18 GST in the AUD 198 final price.
Check whether the quoted discount is inclusive or exclusive
A fixed AUD 20 discount can mean different things. If AUD 20 is an inclusive reduction from AUD 220, the new payment is AUD 200. If AUD 20 is a reduction of the before-GST base under the same 10% treatment, the new base is AUD 180 and the total is AUD 198.
That AUD 2 difference is caused by the discount’s stated basis, not a rounding failure. Ask what the offer actually reduces before putting a number into the calculator.
For the underlying inclusive/exclusive relationship, read how to add and remove Australian GST. The supplier-quote comparison addresses like-for-like quoted prices rather than a reduction of one sale.
Reconcile rounding and records separately
The Australian single-amount engine rounds GST first to cents, with exact half-cents rounded up, then derives the other component. These examples have exact-cent results; they do not establish the correct treatment of an invoice with many items or mixed GST classifications.
Do not infer adjustment-note or reporting compliance from a matching sum. Confirm the applicable official requirements for the transaction and keep the original price, agreed change and supporting records privately. The calculator does not need customer details or uploaded invoices.
Frequently asked questions
How much GST is in AUD 198 at a confirmed 10% treatment?
For one wholly taxable inclusive amount, AUD 198 divided by 11 gives AUD 18 GST. The remaining AUD 180 is before GST.
Is a 10% discount the same as 10% GST?
No. In this example the discount is 10% of the original AUD 220 inclusive price, or AUD 22. GST is 10% of the smaller before-GST base, not 10% of the final inclusive amount.
Can the reduction itself be separated into net and GST?
Under the same established one-rate assumptions, the AUD 22 inclusive reduction contains AUD 20 net and AUD 2 GST. Subtracting these components from the original breakdown gives the final values.
Does this decide how a voucher or manufacturer rebate is taxed?
No. The article assumes the price reduction has already been established as applicable to one wholly taxable supply. Voucher, reimbursement, mixed-supply and other special treatments require separate assessment.
Does the calculator issue a compliant adjustment note?
No. It checks arithmetic. Whether an adjustment event, adjustment note or reporting change is required is a separate question under ATO guidance.
