HST included vs before tax: compare Ontario quotes
For an Ontario supply already confirmed at 13% HST, CAD 200 before HST becomes CAD 226. An equivalent CAD 225 HST-included quote is lower by CAD 1. This is an HST-only comparison; separate PST/QST is excluded.

HST included means do not add HST again
An HST-included price already contains its HST component. A before-HST price does not. For a comparable Ontario cash total, add the established HST component to the exclusive quote, then compare it with the quote that already includes HST.
The main examples below are Ontario HST-only cases on 18 October 2026, not a full Canadian sales-tax service. A later Nova Scotia example shows why the place-of-supply assumption matters; it does not make the province a choice for obtaining a lower price.
Define the province and the taxes in the quote
The phrase tax included is not enough to choose a Canadian reverse-tax formula. Establish the place of supply, treatment, relevant date and which taxes the amount includes. The place of supply is not automatically your own home province.
For a bounded synthetic Ontario example on 18 October 2026, assume an ordinary supply already confirmed as subject to 13% HST. Quote A is CAD 200 before HST; Quote B is CAD 225 including HST. Both exclude any other charges. Quote A becomes CAD 226, so the inclusive Quote B is CAD 1 lower.
Compare your two quotes
Ontario HST-only example, 18 October 2026; separate PST/QST excluded. Synthetic examples, not actual offers or a tax-eligibility decision.
One already-classified amount per quote, assumed 13%; no currency conversion. Maximum 1,000,000,000,000 per input, two decimal places. Inputs stay on this device.
Quote B is lower by CAD 1.00 on the stated tax basis.

| Quote | Before HST | HST | Including HST |
|---|---|---|---|
| A · exclusive input | CAD 200.00 | CAD 26.00 | CAD 226.00 |
| B · inclusive input | CAD 199.12 | CAD 25.88 | CAD 225.00 |
Quote B would match Quote A at an inclusive price of CAD 226.00, with all other terms equal. A lower price is not a recommendation to choose a supplier.
The break-even price for Quote B is CAD 226 including HST. At CAD 225, B is lower by CAD 1 only while the scope and other terms match. Do not confuse the CAD 1 difference with either quote’s tax component.
Use an HST-only total for this comparison
The CRA provincial reference table distinguishes regional GST/HST references and separate provincial components. This guide does not determine a transaction’s classification, provincial exemptions or complete tax liability.
At the example’s assumed Ontario treatment:
Quote A HST = round(200 × 13 ÷ 100) = 26.00
Quote A subtotal plus HST = 226.00
Quote B included HST = round(225 × 13 ÷ 113) = 25.88
Quote B before HST = 225.00 − 25.88 = 199.12
Those values come from the same Canadian GST/HST calculator used by the worked table. They are synthetic offers, not a CRA worked example. HST is the selected component in this comparison; adding another GST charge on top would double-count tax.
A separate Nova Scotia case changes the assumption
Keep the same synthetic price labels, but now consider a supply independently established as subject to the Nova Scotia 14% HST reference. CAD 200 before HST becomes CAD 228. A CAD 225 HST-included amount has CAD 27.63 HST and CAD 197.37 before HST under the engine’s cent display. The inclusive difference is CAD 3.
A different place-of-supply assumption
Separate synthetic Nova Scotia case at 14% on 18 October 2026; not permission to choose a province. GST/HST only; separate PST/QST excluded. Synthetic examples, not actual offers or a tax-eligibility decision.
Quote B is lower by CAD 3.00 on the stated tax basis.
Quote A including HSTCAD 228.00
Quote B including HSTCAD 225.00
Country-engine results. Other charges and tax recovery are not calculated.
| Quote | Before HST | HST | Including HST |
|---|---|---|---|
| A · exclusive input | CAD 200.00 | CAD 28.00 | CAD 228.00 |
| B · inclusive input | CAD 197.37 | CAD 27.63 | CAD 225.00 |
Quote B would match Quote A at an inclusive price of CAD 228.00, with all other terms equal. A lower price is not a recommendation to choose a supplier.
This is a separate reference case, not an instruction to switch the province of an Ontario sale. CRA’s table identifies Nova Scotia’s change from 1 April 2025. Transitional supplies and the correct tax point require separate assessment. The comparison does not determine them.
Do not reuse this denominator for a multi-tax receipt
A receipt containing GST and separate PST or QST is not a GST-only amount. Applying the GST fraction to that entire receipt can misstate the component you are trying to extract. Our calculator requires an explicit exclusion confirmation in the four separate-tax jurisdictions before it will perform reverse GST arithmetic.
That confirmation is a scope safeguard, not a service that removes provincial tax for you. If you cannot establish the separate amount and applicable base, do not check the box just to obtain a result. The Canadian GST/HST guide explains this limitation and the thirteen regional references.
Compare more than the tax label
- Establish the actual place of supply, date and treatment.
- Ask which taxes each quoted amount already contains.
- Match quantities, goods, delivery and all other charges.
- Compare only like-for-like totals; keep rebates and tax-credit questions separate.
A lower HST-only subtotal is not proof of a lower complete cost where other components differ. CRA RC4022 is a further official reference for charging and fractional amounts; it does not turn this partial tool into a provincial-tax or return-filing service.
The tool supports reference dates from 1 April 2025 through 18 October 2026, not historical or future tax determinations. Nova Scotia transitions require separate assessment. Single-amount cent rounding is distinct from cash-payment rounding and multi-line aggregation. Separate PST/QST and professional tax review remain outside the completed scope.
Frequently asked questions
Does a GST-only subtotal include every Canadian sales tax?
No. Separate PST/QST is excluded from this tool, so its subtotal is not a complete multi-tax total.
Is HST a second tax to add after GST?
Not in this ordinary HST-only comparison. Do not add a separate GST component on top of the selected HST component.
Can I reverse a receipt that includes QST with the GST-only calculator?
No. The separate provincial component must be appropriately established and excluded first; otherwise the GST-only denominator is not the right base.
Can I choose the province with the lowest reference percentage?
No. Establish the actual place of supply and treatment. The province is an input to determine correctly, not an optional discount choice.
What HST-included price would match CAD 200 before Ontario HST?
For the assumed 13% Ontario treatment, the matching HST-only inclusive price is CAD 226. Other charges and separate provincial taxes are not calculated.
